After recording my experience of the process of cooking toast I picked out all the important sensory experiences. I Used specific words and phrases to communicate the experience in a way in which someone else could understand.
Sight:
-Reflective
-Industrial and gleaming
-Pale with freckles and tanned edges
-Crumbs on the handle
-Uses two fingers to push down the toast
-Toast set to cook on setting 8
-Air rippling at the top
-Gross yellow
-2.5 turns to get the lid off
-Launched into the air
-Red lights on the inside
Sound:
-Crinkly
-Screeches as its unwound
-Satisfying click
-Flick
-Light grinding noise
-Silk on silk
-Tiny tapping noise
-Pop
-Crunches
-Grindes on the chopping board
Smell:
-Soap
-Burnt toast
-Strong and repugnant
-Stings the nostrils
-Cool and flat
-Fresh like the outdoors
-Fake
-Intoxicating and warm
Taste:
-Plain
Touch:
-Smooth and industrial
-Thin and Floppy
-Soft
-Cool to the touch
-Grooves that are smooth
-Heaps of pressure
-Warm like summer
-Heavy
-New and cold
-Thin and plastic
-Not sharp
-Slides right off
-Grooves that tickle my hand
-Smooth and glides between my fingers
-Hot and breaks away
Other:
-Calming
-Slow
From looking at all these things it is clear that I did not taste the experiance. I will make toast again and try to concentrate more on the taste of the process to get more of a holistic sense to the experience. I also noticed that touch, smell and sound were all very big senses used in the process of making toast, usually I don't notice half the things I noticed today but because I was trying to make toast using all my senses I concentrated on each one trying to get the maximum out of it. The process was also very calming emotionally. I think this is because its a highly ingrained experience and not much can go wrong because of this. I also noticed that it was very slow, this might contribute to the calming effect as it forced the one making the toast to stop and slow down for a few minutes.
